What Is ShipsTrack?

ShipsTrack is a free, real-time ship tracking platform powered by live AIS (Automatic Identification System) data. With coverage of over 200,000 vessels worldwide, you can monitor the exact position, speed, heading, and destination of any ship — instantly.

Whether you're looking for a specific cargo ship by IMO number, checking vessel arrivals at a port, or monitoring maritime traffic through busy straits like the Bosphorus or the Suez Canal, ShipsTrack provides accurate and up-to-date information.

Our platform is used by logistics professionals, ship operators, maritime researchers, journalists, and maritime enthusiasts who need reliable vessel tracking data without complex software or subscriptions.

How Does AIS Ship Tracking Work?

AIS transponders installed on ships continuously broadcast the vessel's MMSI number, position, speed, course, and other data. Our network of AIS receivers picks up these signals globally and displays them on our live marine traffic map. Vessels over 300 gross tons are legally required to carry AIS, ensuring broad coverage.

Yes. ShipsTrack is completely free to use. You don't need to create an account or pay a subscription to track vessels worldwide.
An IMO (International Maritime Organization) number is a unique 7-digit identifier permanently assigned to a ship. It stays with the vessel regardless of name or flag changes.
MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) is a 9-digit number used by a ship's AIS transponder to broadcast its identity and position in real time. Unlike IMO, the MMSI can change if the vessel changes flag state.
AIS positions are typically accurate within a few meters. Updates happen every 2–10 seconds for moving vessels. Ships in open ocean may have less frequent updates due to satellite AIS coverage gaps.
