What are HS & HTS Codes?
The Harmonized System (HS) is the global standard for classifying traded goods, maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and used by 200+ countries. Every product crossing a border is assigned a 6-digit HS code. The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) extends this to 10 digits for US imports, while Schedule B codes are used for US exports.
HS Code (6 digits)
International standard by WCO. First 6 digits are identical across all member countries. Used for customs classification worldwide.
HTS Code (10 digits)
US-specific extension for imports. Administered by USITC. Determines duty rates, quotas, and trade statistics for goods entering the US.
Schedule B (10 digits)
US export classification by Census Bureau. Required for AES filings when shipment value exceeds $2,500 or requires a license.
